While slavery continued in the United States, Britain, and therefore Canada made the practice illegal with the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833. Here are some favorite Black history museums in Canada.
Black Loyalist Heritage Center
Opened in 2015, the Black Loyalist Heritage Center tells the story of Birchton, which was home to free African population outside Africa during the late 18th century. The Heritage Trail leads visitors to a statue on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, commemorating the 1783 Black Loyalist landings.
Saskatchewan African Canadian Heritage Museum
This small yet substantial museum, created in 2002, relates the small Black population in the middles of Canada. It takes its programming, which includes art exhibits, performances and children’s classes, to venues around the province. It also provides speakers for schools and other educational institutions to further human rights causes in both the region and the country as a whole.
Chatham - Kent Museum
In Chnatham rose a prosperous Canadian Black community which thrived during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Chatham inspired the founding of other nearby Black communities and constructed the museum in 1008. This historically rich space also includes an exhibit full of first-person accounts from those who lived and worked in this Canadian community.
Africville Museum
The city of Halifax, originally, refused to provide the Africville residents with infrastructure (基础设施). Instead, they built undesirable developments in and around Africville. By the 1970s, Africville was destroyed. In 2004, the United Nations officially stated the destruction of Africville, plus the treatment of its residents, was a crime against humanity. In 2010, former Africville occupants and their descendants received an apology and funds to rebuild the original church which became the Africville Museum later the year.
