Beijing (Reuters)------China wants rich countries to spend 1 percent of their economic worth in helping developing nations fight global warming, and will press for a new international mechanism to spread “green” technology worldwide.
Developed countries’ funding to support developing countries’ response to climate change should reach 1 percent of the developed countries’ economic worth,” said Gao Guangsheng, a senior Chinese official for climate change policy.
“Current funds to help fight climate change were actually nothing,” Gao said. China will introduce its suggestion in detail at a conference to be attended by the United States, Europe and many rich and poor countries, he said.
Gao’ call means that China wants a more active role in climate change talks.
China’s 1.3 billion people, fast-growing economy and expanding exports have pushed its emissions of greenhouse gases above the United States, according to many experts.
